Jonty Jenner: Fearless Jersey Aiming for T20 World Cup

Tomorrow Jersey will begin their T20 World Cup Qualifier in Scotland with the hope of finishing within the top two, which would ensure history being made and Jersey qualifying for next year’s T20 World Cup in America.

Dan caught up with Jonty Jenner ahead of the big week. Here is what he had to say!

How good is it to be back around the squad again ahead of the next few days?

It’s great to be all back together as a squad. We had a couple of warm up games in Amsterdam on Monday and then flew to Scotland so the boys have had a good run out in the warm up games. There are a few new names in the squad so it’s great to have plenty of excitement around the group. We are a very tight knit squad so it’s always a pleasure to be back together. We understand it’s a big week, but we see it as an opportunity to showcase our talent on a world stage with a squad that’s average age is just over 20.

It’s a T20 World Cup Qualifier in Scotland – explained to us what is in store!

It’s a 7 team tournament with the top two teams qualifying for the T20 World Cup in America next year. We come up against: Denmark, Austria, Germany, Italy, Scotland and Ireland. It’s a round robin tournament, so we have 6 games to get into the top two. We have played against all of these teams in the past and are confident we can challenge to be in the top two come the end of next week.

Is it these big games that spur the side on like no other?

They are big games and they are broadcast on ICC TV. We are a young side who are looking to play a fearless brand of cricket. We have had success doing this so far this year against good opposition including the Kent 2nd team and a Holland A side more recently. As a squad we are happy with how we have played in recent times, but the next step for us is to finish in the top two of this tournament and get to a World Cup, which we certainly have the personnel and the skill level in order to do that.

How confident are you that you can qualify in Scotland this week?

We are very confident we can go on to finish in the top two. It’s T20 cricket, so there is always an element of surprise and we are a surprise package as a team. We have plenty of match winners within our squad so on any given day we are a very dangerous team. It’s an exciting group to be a part of and this is the next step.

Good luck lads!
