The inaugural Cherry Godfrey Cup kicks off tonight, and Dan caught up with newly named Jersey FA Women’s captain Holly Muirhead ahead of the tournament, which starts with a mouthwatering tie against Guernsey tonight!

How exciting is this new tournament for the team?
Very exciting, it’s an amazing opportunity Cherry Godfrey has given us to get a few competitive games in at the start of the season. We’ve enjoyed being able to train through summer and are looking forward to being able to play at home.

You’ve been drawn against Guernsey, how keen are you to play them again?
We were keen to play any of the teams to be honest. Obviously we have a history with Guernsey, but our focus is on us as a team and to show off how hard we’ve been training.

What are the goals for the tournament?
We are looking to use these games as building blocks for the season, and to embed how we play and work as a team. We are looking forward to everyone seeing how hard we work for each other on the pitch. But most importantly, I want the team to enjoy the occasion. Springfield is a special stadium for us, so to be able to play there in front of our families, friends and supporters needs to be soaked in and enjoyed.

How good would a big crowd be for the team?
Support means so much to us. I’m not sure if people understand how much of a difference it makes. But when we are on the pitch and can hear and feel the support it can be the difference between winning and losing, especially against our local rivals. So I hope everyone can get down and support us.

Good luck to the team! Kick off is at 8pm tonight at Springfield Stadium. Head down and support the beans!
